The Kyrenia Gate is one of the three entrances to the city built by the Venetians. The gate was originally called the “Porta Del Proveditore”. Kyrenia gate has undergone several changes since its Venetian days. In the Turks restored it and added a square chamber with a domed roof, and in the British demolished the section of the walls around it to facilitate the traffic into and out of the city.
Still visible however is a panel recording the date of its building and a stone tablet inscribed with verses from the Koran. For more than a thousand years Nicosia was a walled town, like most towns in the Middle Ages in Europe. Very few have retained their ancient walls, and those that have, such as Carcassonne in the south of France, regard them as show places for tourists.
Nicosia has retained its walls because of their huge size, and, being just earth ramparts with stone facing, not many building blocks could be obtained by demolishing them. Before the days of preservation of ancient monuments and various antique buildings, it was common practice to build a house with stones derived from crumbling ruins of walls and towers.

In a third land a child was to be born, and the proud father made ready gifts, and purchased silken robes, and prepared a feast for his friends; but, alas! Bitter reproaches were heaped upon the mother, for were there not enough women already on the earth? So, while its hold on life was yet uncertain, the husband’s mother placed wet cloths upon its lips, and soon the faint breath stopped, and the white soul went fluttering heavenward again.
She was full of apologies for the trouble she was giving me. I told her that the apologies were due to my maid and to her own servants rather than to me; “and besides,” I added, glancing round, “I am distinctly a gainer by the change. The City. Nicosia, Lefkosia , the capital of Cyprus, one of the oldest cities in our part of the world, today is a sophisticated and cosmopolitan place in the Eastern Mediterranean, rich in history and culture and combines its historic past with the amenities of a modern city. Nicosia was a city-state known as Ledra or Ledrae in ancient times. Ledra in Hellenic and Roman times was a small, unimportant town, also known as Lefkothea. By the time it received its first Christian bishop, Trifillios, in , the town was called Lefkousia or Ledra.
Ledra is now the name of the most popular commercial street. Still known as Lefkosia, the city became the island’s capital around the 10th century. It had grown in importance because of threats to the coastal cities Paphos and Salamis, which made many people flee to the centrally located Lefkosia. The oldest documentation that exists concerning Nicosia within the walls, dates back to , when the Venetians took over the island, and built the fortification with the eleven bastions, that one can still see today.
The fortification has been designed by the famous Venetian architects Savorgnano and Barbaro. The perimeter of the walls reached 4. Each bastion carried the name of one of the families pillars of the Italian aristocracy of the town which funded its construction. Nicosia though, has a history dating long before that period, and has been the capital of the island since , when a French Royal family, the Lusignans, made it their capital.
